Privacy Policy
How this site handles personal information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
Last updated August 2026.
Who we are
This site is operated by chinomatico, of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean that publication. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
What we collect
We collect only what you send us. If you use the contact form, that is your name, your email address, the subject you select and the message you write. If you join the letter, that is your name and your email address. We do not ask for, and do not want, any sensitive information as that term is defined in the Privacy Act.
Our web server also records standard technical logs when a page is requested: the IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page and the browser user agent. These logs are kept for 30 days and are then deleted.
Why we collect it
Contact details are used to answer your message and, where relevant, to follow up a correction to an entry. Letter subscriptions are used to send the quarterly letter and nothing else. Server logs are used to keep the site running and secure. We do not use your information for any other purpose, and we do not sell, rent or trade it.
Consent
Sending the contact form or joining the letter is a voluntary act, and the consent checkbox on the form records your agreement to this policy. You can withdraw consent at any time by writing to the contact below, and every letter carries an unsubscribe link.
No analytics and no tracking
This site runs no analytics, no advertising pixels, no third-party cookies and no cross-site trackers. No social media buttons load code from other companies. Cookies, if any are set at all, are limited to those technically necessary to deliver the page.
Hosting and contractors
The site is hosted by a third-party provider, and the letter is sent using a third-party mail service. These suppliers process data on our instructions only. We use no other contractors with access to personal information.
Overseas storage
Our hosting and mail providers may store data on servers located outside Australia. Where that is the case, we take reasonable steps under Australian Privacy Principle 8 to ensure the recipient handles the information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles before disclosing it.
Your rights
- Access: you may ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction: you may ask us to correct information that is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete.
- Deletion: you may ask us to delete your details, and we will unless a law requires us to keep them.
- Withdrawal: you may withdraw consent to the letter or to further contact at any time.
We respond to requests within 30 days and do not charge a fee for a reasonable request.
Complaints
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, write to us first at the address below and we will investigate. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
